January 22, 2004 --

Foodnet's Year in Review

Foodnet has operated out of our kitchen on North Triphammer Road for five years now! During that time we've served over 681,000 meals, improved the quality and variety of our menus, increased public awareness of our services and supported the health and well-being of hundreds of people.

Highlights of 2003:

The Foodnet Board adopted this mission statement: Foodnet's mission is to provide meals and other nutrition services that promote the dignity, well-being and independence of older adults and others in need in Tompkins County.

Foodnet served a total of 159,277 meals (4,494 more than last year!)

Meals in Community Centers grew the most. We made the painful decision to close one community meal site, located at the Salvation Army, in response to deepening budget cuts.

Participants gave $170,758 ($3,375 less than last year, but still an impressive amount!)

The Annual Fund raised $55,064 to support direct meal services, outreach and equipment. Our 2nd annual Wheel-A-Thon raised $2500. For a complete list of more than 350 donors, please see Foodnet's 2003 Annual Report.

Nutrition Teaching Aides from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County supplemented the educational efforts of our Registered Dietitian with cooking classes, a walking and exercise group, and classes on specific topics chosen by participants.

Our Registered Dietitian provided nutrition counseling for 336 people.

Foodnet's Plans for the Year Ahead

Celebrate Foodnet's 16th Annual Picnic on Friday, June 25 at Stewart Park! We've invited Johnny Russo to play his East Hill Classic Jazz. Save the date!

The 3rd Annual Wheel-A-Thon will happen at Cass Park on Saturday, September 18. Participants will collect pledges to reach a donation goal of at least $35 - the cost of one week's meals for one person. Then they will either drive or use other forms of wheels to complete courses with checkpoints where they collect cards and the chance to win some prizes. Drivers follow a scenic, 40 mile route. Roller bladers, wheel chair riders, skateboarders, etc will follow the Cayuga Waterfront Trail led by the Cornell Women's Ice Hockey Team. Radio London will play vintage 60's rock 'n' roll while we relax afterwords. Tell your friends!

Promote Foodnet services through public education and community outreach.

Encourage community members to help Foodnet through volunteerism and financial support.
