FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Girl Scouts Prepare Blizzard Bags

Plan ahead to stay safe in all types of weather

October 16, 2003 -- Power outages, winter storms and other events could prevent Foodnet from preparing and delivering meals, so Girl Scout Troop 270 is helping Foodnet prepare blizzard bags. These food packages will include the "New York State Weather Hazards Awareness Guide" to help participants prepare and stay safe in all types of weather. Blizzard bags will be delivered in November.

Generally, Foodnet does not cancel service because of winter weather unless the public schools are closed because of unsafe road conditions. If Foodnet cannot deliver meals there will be an announcement on the radio and a special message at 266-9553. The local radio station with emergency generating capacity is 92-WICB FM, so they might be broadcasting even if other stations are off the air.

When Foodnet must be closed, use your blizzard bag or check with your site manager about group dining. SAVE YOUR BLIZZARD BAG until it is needed, and set aside some extra food and water in case of emergency.
